100A vs. 200A Electrical Panel: Signs You Need an Upgrade

A lot of Cincinnati homeowners find out their electrical panel is undersized the same way: a breaker keeps tripping, or a contractor quoting an EV charger or a new range says “you’ll need a panel upgrade first.” Here’s what that actually means, and how to tell before you’re mid-renovation and stuck.
What the amperage number means
Your panel’s amperage rating — 100A, 150A, 200A — is the total amount of electrical current your home’s service can safely deliver at once. Older Cincinnati homes, especially anything built before the 1980s, often shipped with 60A or 100A service, which was plenty for a house without central air, an electric range, and a house full of chargers. Modern homes are typically built with 200A service because modern homes use a lot more power at once — central air, electric ranges, hot tubs, and increasingly, EV chargers, all drawing from the same panel.
100A isn’t automatically a problem — plenty of smaller homes run fine on it. It becomes a problem when what you’re asking the panel to do outgrows what it was sized for.
Signs your panel is undersized
- Breakers trip when you run two things at once — the microwave and the window AC unit fighting for the same circuit.
- The panel feels warm or hums — panels shouldn’t run hot. That’s a diagnose-it-now situation, not a someday one.

- Flickering lights when appliances kick on — sometimes a wiring issue, sometimes a panel struggling under load. Worth a diagnostic either way.
- Your insurance company is asking about it — some insurers flag older panel types during underwriting or renewal. That’s usually the first time a homeowner learns their panel is a known issue, not the last.
What a panel upgrade actually involves
A full upgrade isn’t just swapping the box. It typically means:
- Load calculation — confirming what the home actually needs based on its square footage and major appliances, per the load calculation methods laid out in the National Electrical Code, not guessing at a bigger number.
- New panel and main breaker — sized to the calculated load, with room for future circuits.
- Utility coordination — the power company has to disconnect and reconnect service, since panel work happens live at the meter.

If your home is old enough to still have its original panel, it’s also worth knowing that certain older panel brands and designs from past decades have documented reliability issues that go beyond normal wear — breakers that don’t trip reliably under fault conditions being the most serious version of that. AFCI and GFCI protection in a new panel
A panel upgrade isn’t just a bigger box — it’s also an opportunity to bring circuit protection up to current code, which older panels typically don’t have.
